Location Details

Maracajaú is a peaceful coastal village with around 2,500 residents. Located 56 km north from Natal. The popular Ponta Negra is also located just a short distance South.

Natal itself is located on the extreme Northeast tip of Brazil and is the part of Brazil closest to Europe. Natal is the Capital of Rio Grande de Norte.

Local climate

Since Natal is only a few degrees from the equator, the seasonal variations are very small. Most of the year the day temperature is around 30 degrees and the night temperature rarely falls below 24 degrees. The annual average temperature is 26,4 degrees (includes day & night temperatures).

The season of the year in Brazil are opposite to Europe and are as follows: Summer 22 Dec- 21 March, Autumn 21 March- 22 June, Winter 22 June- 22 September, Spring  22 September-22 December.

In Natal, April to June is considered “rainy season” and during this period it rains intensely for a few hours after which the sun comes out again. Even during this time, the temperature never drops below 24 degrees. The rest of the year is very sunny and the climate is dry and there is always a refreshing tropical breeze from the sea which makes the temperature feel even more pleasant.

Brazil does not suffer from any tropical storms, hurricanes or earthquakes.

The Region

  • Average temperature of 26C and there is no Off-season
  • The Northeast of Brazil is only 7-8 hours by plane from central Europe, Natal is the closest point from Latin America to Europe.
  • Cost of living is very low, around 20% of the cost of living in the UK
  • Maracajaú is synonymous with peace and quiet. Here "stress" is a foreign word. The small fishing village still retains its original charm, with sailing rafts anchored on the sea shore. The people are very welcoming and their main source of income comes from artesian fishing. You don’t have to spend a lot of time in Maracajaú before this lifestyle starts to affect you and soon the word stress is removed from your vocabulary as well.
  • Ever since a road was built to give access to the village, Maracajaú has been visited by an increasing number of tourists. Recently, the economic profile has been changing, with investors arriving from all over the world to reveal Maracajaú’s tourist potential. As such, Maracajaú is nowadays one of the most promising beaches in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, as far as tourism is concerned.
  • Its beaches with crystalline water, sea-front coconut groves, sand dunes with white sand and a large coral formation a few kilometers from the coastline occupying more than 13km², makes it  place of stunning natural beauty. An excellent lodging and restaurant structure is already in place to unite peace and tranquility with comfort.
  • Next to the village is a large aquatic park that is visited by approx. 100.000 tourists per year. Several golf courses will be developed next to the village as well in the coming years.
  • Diving and snorkeling in the parrachos (large natural pools that form at low tide) is very common, and several sunken ships are part of the underwater seascape that can be seen by anyone who goes diving with an oxygen cylinder. Other activities range from horse riding, watersports, exciting daytrips in beach buggies along the coastline, or simply relaxing on the beach. The village has a supermarket and pharmacy, and recently several new restaurants and small shops have opened in the village.
  • This idyllic fishing village and the climate with its constant breeze and dry, equatorial trade winds, the people, the food and the low prices, all this makes Maracajaú the perfect place to relax. However, if you want more “action”, in a little over 30 minutes you can arrive in neighboring Natal with 800.000 inhabitants and all the modern facilities and nightlife you can wish for. The prices are so low that you can go by taxi and spend the night in a hotel for a small sum of money.
  • Presently approx 150.000 tourists visit Maracajaú per year, and the number is expected to increase sharply the coming years along with development taking place in the area. Almost all the land is sold around the village and it will undergo a transformation in the coming years. The authorities are very strict when it comes to granting building permissions. The environmental norms are very strict which will guarantee that this remains a low density area. As mentioned before, the new airport with an estimated completion in June 2009, will be just north of Natal and as a result Maracajaú will be reached from the airport in approx. 25 minutes by car. Maracajaú is perfectly positioned to benefit from the massive increase in tourism in the coming years.

This is a true piece of paradise on the charming Northeastern coastline of Brazil. To no surprise, lately Maracajaú is also known as the Caribbean of the Rio Grande do Norte.
